‘The ignorance’ people blast as rich folk jump on Saltburn trend & flaunt wealth despite the cost of living crisis
FROM the gross grave and bath scenes to THAT ‘vampire’ scene, it’s little wonder Saltburn has fast become the most divisive film of the year.
The posh thriller stars the likes of Jacob Elordi, Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and follows a university student who invites a fellow student back to his family’s sprawling estate when he becomes obsessed with him.
Since its release, Emerald Fennel’s controversial film, which is filmed at Drayton House, a sprawling mansion with 127 rooms, has left Gen Z viewers obsessed with the rich, upper class lifestyle noughties aesthetic.
The final scene showed Barry Keoghan dancing through the halls of Saltburn totally starkers, while Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor” played in the background.
It wasn’t long before those from presumably wealthy backgrounds took to TikTok and jumped at the chance to recreate the closing scene – albeit fully dressed – all while showing off their very stately homes.
Taking to social media (@anastasia.graff), one woman wrote: “When Saltburn hit a little too close too home.”
She then shows off a grand estate complete with swimming pool, tennis courts and acres of breathtaking grounds, before moving inside to reveal the decadent interior.
Another (@meg_coombs1) wrote: “Dancing round my fiancés family home like…,” before sharing a clip showing herself moving from room to room while dressed in her pyjamas.
At one point, she does a shimmy as she passes the grand piano, before stroking her hands along the full-size snooker table.
A third (@salasmaria), who could be seen making her way through a grand house all lavishly decorated for Christmas, captioned the post: “Me after watching Saltburn.”
And a fourth (@alicefletchdf) added: “Pov: family Christmas is giving Saltburn,” before then revealing the festive decor in her grand abode.
However, the TikTok trend hasn’t gone down well with some social media users, who have blasted the Gen Z generation for flaunting their wealth – particularly during a time where the cost-of-living crisis is affecting so many.
“Maybe because wealth this crazy shouldn’t exist while people are literally f***ing starving and dying in poverty??” wrote one.
A second raged: “This proves that Saltburn grasps the ignorance that certain people have about themselves!”
A third urged: “Read the room.”
Meanwhile, another noted: “It’s exposed how superficial the rich really are.”
A further added: “I love how people are doing this just to show off their wealth.”
And one more chimed: “The rich posting these videos as if it wasn’t making fun of them.”
