Overseas Watch: Ang finds better form Down Under while Leow and Foo fall short in Thailand

January 21: Ryan Ang fired a final round five-under-par 65, surging 23 places up the leaderboard to conclude his challenge at the adidas Australian Amateur in tied-11th place.
This marked a significant improvement for the 24-year-old after finishing in a share of 40th place at the Australian Masters of the Amateurs Championship a fortnight ago.
“I was still shaking off the rust from the holidays and couldn’t really get anything going with driving and ball striking at the Australian Masters of the Amateurs. Along with putts that didn’t drop, it was a pretty average week.
“As for the Australian Amateur, I’m super happy with how I finished today. I hit the ball much better throughout the whole week, and that was after a quick tune-up at the range the day after Masters of the Amateurs finished. I hung in there the first two days being on the much tougher side of the draw and was rewarded with a low round today,” said Ang, where he posted rounds of 71, 75, 71 and 65 for a four-day total of even-par 282.
Team Singapore was represented by Ang, Brayden Lee and Aloysa Atienza at the Australians Amateur. The latter two did not progress beyond the 36-hole cut.
SGA professionals James Leow and Gregory Foo, meanwhile, missed out on securing their Asian Tour cards despite putting up a battling performance at the Tour’s Qualifying School in Hua Hin, Thailand.
Starting out among the 219 hopefuls vying to make the grade at the five-round marathon qualifiers, both players were among the top-140 players and ties to progress into the third and fourth round.
With respective total scores of 283 and 284 for Leow and Foo, they were among the top-70 players and ties after 72 holes to play in the final round. However, Leow struggled to a 76 while Foo closed with a 75.
Singapore’s other hopeful Koh Dengshan had earlier signed for rounds of 72, 72, 75 and 72 to miss out on a place in the final round.
Ends.
