An Evening at the Getty with “Recording Artists: Intimate Addresses”
“DEAREST MERMAN, green-lit; dearest moonman, blacktop; dearest and most distant relation, I have returned from my jaunt and await your pleasure …” So opens one of many love letters from clay artist M.C. Richards to avant-garde musician David Tudor. Taken from the Getty archives, this bizarre and besotted letter is one of many portals into the interior lives of artists explored in the latest season, titled Intimate Addresses, of the Getty ’s podcast Recording Artists. Letters from Frida Kahlo, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik, Benjamin Patterson, and more reveal the interconnected world of the starving, rising artists as they request funds from patrons, send pages of sketchbooks, and watch the carrots grow while waiting for their lovers to return home.
Join LARB at the Getty Center this Saturday, January 27, at 5 p.m. to enjoy a live recording of Intimate Addresses and a viewing of the letters.
