Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes blames teammates for being selfish in the final third that allowed Newport County to come back in the game.
The Red Devils defeated League Two club by 4-2 on Sunday night to progress to the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
The visitors wasted several opportunities by making poor decisions in the final third after scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes.
Fernandes gave honest feedback about his teammates after the game.
He told BBC One (via Manchester Evening News): “Obviously, this wasn’t the result we wanted. We won, but we didn’t want to concede goals.
“Obviously, the first one is a great goal from them—an unbelievable shot. We have to be more focused in the second half.
“We have to kill it off. We had chances to make it 3-0, but in these games, everyone wants to score, and we don’t get the best decisions for the team.”
Erik ten Hag admitted that his players were wasteful in the final third but controlled the game well.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “We controlled the game, but maybe we were a little bit slower than we were.
“We had chances to make it 3-0, [Alejandro] Garnacho on the crossbar with two players in front of the goal.
“We had some shots from Antony as well. We had very good chances and they had nothing really, it was out of nothing they scored a goal.”
Man United’s manager and captain are spot on with their comments
The Red Devils became complacent after finding themselves two goals ahead early in the clash against County.
Alejandro Garnacho had a great opportunity to square the ball to Fernandes or Rasmus Hojlund for an easy tap-in. However, the youngster chose to fire a shot.
His attempt hit the crossbar, leaving the captain and the striker frustrated in the middle.
Antony also squandered several efforts when he should have passed the ball to his teammates, who were in better positions.
Their selfishness almost came to bite them as the hosts restored parity right after the break.
Courtesy of second-half goals from Antony and Hojlund, Man United avoided an upset and marched to the next stage of the FA Cup.
