A man has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
A nine-year-old boy has died in hospital after being spotted walking around a Devon town with a man while appearing to be ‘unwell’.
Emergency services were called to Brixham, south of Torquay, at 6.20pm on Sunday evening after receiving reports of the pair wandering around the area.
They had been seen on Glenmore Road near the centre of the popular English Riviera spot.
First aid was given to the boy when he was found at a nearby address, but he was confirmed dead after being taken to hospital.
The child’s next of kin have been informed.
A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect, and currently remains in custody.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the death was being treated as unexplained and that inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
The force has appealed for anyone who tried to speak to the man and child to get in contact with them to help with the investigation.
Detective Inspector Jen Rose said: ‘I’m appealing to hear from for anyone who was in Drew Street, Penn Lane, Castor Road, Greenswood Road and Bolton Street between 5pm and 7pm and may have witnessed the incident.
‘We believe that there were members of the public who attempted to speak to the man and child.
‘I’d urge anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to police, anyone who has footage of any kind, including dashcam, mobile phone and doorbell footage to please get in touch.’
