Queen’s Park faced Glasgow Women for the fourth Glasgow derby this season. In their prior league clashes, The Spiders secured convincing victories of 5-0 and 6-0. The team hoped for a similar outcome today, aiming to rediscover their winning rhythm following a slightly disappointing start to the year.
Marking his 50th game in charge at the club, Craig Joyce shuffled up the starting XI, introducing five changes. Olivia King and Hannah Cunningham were handed their first starts for the club, stepping into the shoes of Taylor Davis and Megan Quigley. Meanwhile, Rachael O’Neill, Robin Gallagher, and Ami Robertson took the places of Eleanor Smith, Nicole Cairney, and Abby Callaghan. Additionally, Rachael McConnachie made a welcomed return to the bench.
The Spiders kicked things off in style, grabbing a 1-0 lead just 75 seconds into the game. It all started with a free kick awarded to Queen’s Park after Olivia King was fouled. Ciara Bonner lofted the ball into the box, and Ellie Kane cleverly redirected it across the box to Robin Gallagher. Although Glasgow’s Ramsay managed to block Gallagher’s shot, the relentless Monica Harty swooped in and hammered the rebound into the back of the net and notching her third goal of the season.

Queen’s Park then continued their perfect start to the game as they doubled their lead on the 5th minute. A great bit of interplay between Craig, King, and Cunningham moved The Spiders up the park and earned them a corner. Ellie Kane whipped the ball into the box, finding Hannah Cunningham who rose to head the ball into the net, securing her first goal as a Spider.

Queen’s Park asserted their dominance, keeping Glasgow Women hemmed in their own half. The Spiders piled on the pressure and were relentlessly pushing forwards, eager to put the game well out of reach for the away side.
Glasgow Women, however, seized their first opportunity in the 11th minute when they were granted a free kick in the middle of the park. Monica Smith launched the ball forward from the set piece, creating chaos in the 18-yard box. This commotion led to Emma Rodgers being brought down, earning a penalty for the visitors. Elisha Duff stepped up for the penalty, and while her initial shot was parried by Lauren McGregor in the Spiders’ goal, Duff was quick on the follow-up, knocking the rebound into the net.

Queen’s Park looked to re-establish their two-goal advantage in the 17th minute as Olivia King intercepted a Glasgow goal kick. The ball found its way to Emma Craig in the middle of the park, and she delivered an excellent ball over the top for Ellie Kane to chase. Kane brilliantly controlled the ball before unleashing a thunderous shot towards goal. Unfortunately, her attempt struck the outside of the post, sending the ball out for a goal kick.
In the 26th minute, Queen’s Park extended their lead, going two ahead once again. The Spiders initiated a swift counterattack, as Emma Craig intercepted a Glasgow free kick and launched the ball forwards towards Ellie Kane. Kane flicked the ball on brilliantly to lose her marker and drive up the park before fizzing a ball across the box to find Ami Robertson stationed on the 6-yard line. Showing remarkable composure, Robertson controlled the ball before calmly slotting it into the bottom corner.

Having posed little threat to the Queen’s Park defence throughout the game, Glasgow Women were awarded another free kick in the middle of the park in the 32nd minute. As before, the ball was launched long into the box, and Rachael O’Neill managed to clear it. However, the referee spotted an incident before the clearance, with Natasha Donaghy going down, resulting in another penalty. Elisha Duff took the kick once again, but Lauren McGregor made another great save for the second time this afternoon, and this time O’Neill was on hand to clear the danger.

The Spiders then had an excellent opportunity to widen their lead just before halftime as Ellie Kane capitalised on a loose ball in the middle of the park and surged towards the goal. Making her way into the 18-yard box, Kane cut inside to take a shot. However, she was obstructed by a Glasgow defender, prompting the referee to point to the spot for the third time this afternoon. Kane stepped up for the spot kick, but unfortunately, her effort sailed just over the crossbar.

Queen’s Park came out for the second half, continuing their momentum from before the break. They maintained control of the game, silencing the away side while moving the ball well and working their way up the park. The Spiders created several chances, with shots coming off for Kane and Robertson, but unfortunately, none found the back of the net.
The Spiders finally got the breakthrough they most definitely deserved as they were awarded a penalty on the 69th minute. Ellie Kane was tripped at the edge of the 18-yard box, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Learning from her previous attempt, Kane made no mistake and confidently slotted the ball into the bottom corner, extending Queen’s Park’s lead.

The Spiders continued their dominance, although the remainder of the half stayed relatively quiet. While no significant chances were created, Queen’s Park retained possession, displaying patience in their play as Glasgow Women found themselves camped in their own half.
With just enough time left on the clock, Kane struck once more, securing her double and marking the fifth and final goal of the afternoon in the 90th minute. Leah Daly capitalised on a loose ball in the middle of the park before delivering a fantastic pass to Ellie Kane. Kane took a brilliant touch forward before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
