The thrifty tip that could save you money on every Aldi shop – all you need to do is double-check the best before date
THE cost of a simple food shop has soared recently, so savvy shoppers have been coming up with loads of helpful tricks to cut the price as much as possible.
But when one shopper stumbled across one money saving hack she thought it sounded too good to be true so put it to the test herself.
The savvy shopper put the trick to the test in her local Aldi[/caption] She got a 30 percent discount on the chicken[/caption]Chelsea, who posts on social media as @thriftytipsandtripsmum, filmed herself trying out the hack in her local Aldi.
The mum explained she read that the supermarket offers discounts on food with an expiry date of five days or less – which is perfect if you’re shopping on a small budget.
Chelsea explained: “If you’re a seasoned Aldi shopper, you’ll know their prices are pretty damn good! But what you might not know about is their awesome expiration date policy!!!
“If you pick up an item which expires within five days of purchase, you get that item at a discounted price AND this includes items which haven’t yet been marked down!
“The best discounts are of course on items with expiry dates of the same day and the following day.”
To put the hack to the test, Chelsea picked up a pack of chicken breast fillets from the shelf which expired the following day but hadn’t been marked down yet.
At the till the mum then asked for a discount and they knocked off a whopping 30 percent – not too shabby at all.
The mum went on to say that the hack would be good for certain food staples like cheese, bread and meat.
You could stock up on the reduced items and freeze them, she suggested, so you don’t have to use them so fast but still get the best bargains.
However, the mum did note that she only tried it in her local Aldi and different Aldi stores might not apply the same discount.
Of course, you could wait until the items are eventually marked down with yellow stickers, but this hack means you get the items your after before anyone else.
Not only that, but if you’re shopping for ingredients to use the same day it might be worth having a root to find the closest use by date anyway.
Other savvy shoppers loved the trick and couldn’t wait to try it out.
One said: “Wow. Amazing tip. I didn’t know this. I’ll try it I shop loads in there.”
However, one person said: “I work at Aldi and it’s only same day and next day that’s 30% off.
“Date checking is usually done late afternoon/early evening and the next day stock is reduced to 30% off and the current date is either reduced further or taken off sale.”
But someone else shared a trick for food deliveries, they commented: “When you do your online delivery, there is a number on the fresh item with a plus sign that says how many days they expect it to last.
“If is delivered and has an expiry date less that the number expected you get a full refund, that’s from Asda and Tesco, not sure the others.”
The Sun has contacted Aldi for comment.
