Players of popular online shooter are shocked to discover their progress will be erased
ONE of video games’ most competitive arenas is that of online shooters.
Every day millions log into their favourite games and battle against each other to rise to the top.
If you want to do well, you need to be on top of the latest trends, and that means sinking a lot of time and effort into a particular game.
However, Apex Legends is going to shake that up by bringing everyone back to the same tier.
Season 20 will start with a complete rank reset, with absolutely everyone starting out at Bronze 4.
It doesn’t matter where you were on the ladder prior to this, you will be taken back to basics.
Players will then fight their way out of the bottom ranks with all skill levels mixed together.
The hope that is once people have settled at their new ranks, the playing field will be much fairer.
We spoke to lead progression designer Chris Cleroux for him to explain the change.
He says: “The last several seasons have led us down a path that isn’t working the way we wanted to or hoped.
“It’s not as rewarding as we want it to be for players. Frankly, we know that we can do better.”
“The first piece that we’re focused on is trust.
“Not only our players trusting us to build systems that they’ll enjoy, but they also trust those systems to be an accurate reflection of both their skill and their time spent in Apex Ranked.”
Alongside the reset changes will be made to how progression is judged.
Kills, assists, and participations have different values depending on your placement, so you’re able to get more out of a combat-heavy win than you would for creeping your way to first.
This means that winning matches won’t be the only thing that helps you rise through the ranks like other games, and there will be more nuance.
