Wisconsin GOP struggles to push back against Democrats’ recent momentum: report

0

Democrats have enjoyed a recent win streak in Wisconsin, and Republicans have struggled to slow their momentum.

Since Donald Trump's 2016 presidential election win, Democrats and candidates backed by them have won 15 of the last 18 statewide races, and the first liberal state Supreme Court majority in 15 years could redraw gerrymandered legislative maps and cut into the GOP's longtime statehouse majorities, reported NBC News.

“This opportunity to have fair maps is going to change a lot of things,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI).

The state emerged as a hotbed of the Tea Party movement in 2010, and Republican Gov. Scott Walker and the GOP-dominated legislature and right-leaning Supreme Court turned Wisconsin into a laboratory for anti-union policies, relaxed gun safety laws, abortion limits and voter ID laws, but the former governor said Trump was to blame for recent conservative losses.

“He turns people out on the left,” Walker said. “Trump motivates the left.”

Wisconsin Republicans have been beset by infighting, like GOP organizations in other states, with an effort by Trump supporters to impeach Assembly speaker Robin Vos and violent threats against Elections Commission administrator Meagan Wolfe, and Baldwin still doesn't have a serious Republican opponent in a race they believed could be competitive.

"[Democrats] are going to get redistricting, abortion and reversals of what the conservative court accomplished," said GOP strategist Brandon Scholz. "They’re going to have more Democrats in the Legislature. What’s the Wisconsin GOP doing to bring back the voters they have lost? It can’t be business as usual.”
