It Amazes Me – Former Leeds Star Shocked Club Not Focusing On Player’s Weaknesses
Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome has conceded that he is surprised that more is not being done to iron out Junior Firpo’s defensive frailties as a full-back.
Firpo has replaced Sam Byram in the team and has started the last four Championship games as the left-back in the Leeds team.
Leeds are on a five-game winning run in the league and the team have been performing well in all areas but Newsome is still not convinced by Firpo as a defender.
The former White stressed that there are still serious deficiencies in him as a defender, especially in his inability to stop a cross from coming into the penalty box.
He insisted that Firpo just does not do enough to stop those crosses or even put the winger under pressure and the former White is surprised that it is not being sorted out on the training pitch.
Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds: “If there is anybody on the pitch that I would like to have a word with, it would be Junior Firpo.
“It’s about his lack of stopping crosses and his lack of awareness of danger in stopping those crosses.
“It’s a real issue in his game that needs to be ironed out.
“He thinks that jogging towards the winger is his job and that’s my job done.
“If they crossed the ball and I have dangled my foot and I have done everything.
“You haven’t done everything to stop that ball. When that ball ends up in the back of the net, I think you could have done more to stop that cross.
“Even if you don’t stop the cross, what you do is put the crosser under pressure.
“It is things like that and it amazes me that it’s not being picked up from within yet.”
It remains to be seen whether Byram gets back into the team when Leeds take on Plymouth in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
