It comes as a source close to Harry revealed he has spoken with the King and will travel to the UK to see him in the coming days.

The King is understood to have informed Harry of his diagnosis by phone before Buckingham Palace released a statement at 6pm.

What we know so far:

The statement said: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

“Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

It remains unclear when the King will be able to resume full-time duties.

Prince William, meanwhile, will return to royal duties on Wednesday following a break to care for Kate and their children.

The Prince of Wales will hold an investiture at Windsor Castle.

He will attend the London Air Ambulance fundraising gala in London’s Raffles Hotel later the same day.

It comes as King Charles carried out a staggering 516 engagements last year, including 94 trips abroad.

Despite his diagnosis, he will continue with his weekly audiences with the Prime Minister.

The King will also continue to receive Red Boxes and State documents during his treatment.
