Wallkill man arrested after altercation with state trooper
WAWAYANDA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Wallkill man was arrested following an altercation with a state trooper in the town of Wawayanda. Jahri Evans, 24, faces multiple charges.
On Thursday, around 6:37 a.m., troopers responded to I-84 westbound in Wawayanda for reports of a man walking on the interstate. A trooper located the man, offered assistance, and asked who he was.
New York State Police (NYSP) say the man initially gave the trooper a fake name and continued walking away. Police say the trooper then attempted to stop him and Evans fought back.
Authorities say that during the struggle, Evans attempted to grab the trooper's gun from the holster. The trooper eventually gained control with the help of a retired NYSP investigator who drove up to the altercation and helped with arresting Evans.
Charges:
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Third-degree robbery
- False impersonation
- Resisting arrest
- Obstruction of governmental administration
Police say Evans was out on bail for an incident that happened last month. He was remanded to the Orange County Jail on $50,000 cash, $100,000 bond, or $300,000 secured bond.
