Beijing defended the research vessels' presence in the Indian Ocean and the Maldives, stating that they were for peaceful purposes and aimed at contributing to oceanic scientific understanding. The Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 was permitted to dock at Male port by the pro-China President of the Maldives. China appreciates the cooperation with the Maldives in marine scientific research. The Chinese ship is expected to dock at a Male port on February 8. China has promised a grant and increased tourism to the Maldives.
