Tajikistan reports no drop in drug trafficking from Afghanistan
Officials from Tajikistan’s anti-drug agency have contradicted reports of reduced drug production in Afghanistan, stating that they have not seen any evidence of decreased drug trafficking into Tajikistan.
Russia’s TASS news agency reported on Monday, February 5th, citing one of Tajikistan’s anti-drug agency officials who said that drug trafficking from Afghanistan into Tajikistan continues unabated, with these substances being further transported to other countries through this route.
The agency mentioned that drug production has begun in hidden laboratories in Afghanistan and over 2.5 tons of drugs have been discovered in border areas of these two countries in 2023.
According to the report, the Tajikistan Drug Control Agency added that it has not received any practical measures from the Taliban administration to combat drug trafficking.
The report by the anti-drug and crime-fighting organization of the United Nations in 2023 claimed a 95% reduction in opium cultivation under the rule of the Taliban caretaker government.
The Taliban officials have not yet responded to Tajikistan officials’ statements.
A United Nations report also indicates that after the ban on poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, the income of farmers has decreased by 96%.
It’s worth noting that following the Taliban’s takeover, Mullah Haibatullah, the leader of the Taliban regime, declared the cultivation, production, and trafficking of drugs illegal in Afghanistan.
