‘Game changer,’ DIY fans praise homeowner who gave her doors a ‘luxury’ makeover using a fake tanning mitt
A DIY fan has discovered a super savvy hack when giving her doors a “luxury” makeover on a budget.
Claire transformed the inside of her home by changing the colour of her doors to black.
Claire is part of 329.6k people on TikTok who is sharing updates of her house update under the hashtag #homerenovation.
The hashtag page is filled with videos sharing their savvy hacks on how they have managed to change their home around.
And Claire’s has managed to gather lots of attention, but it was how she did her makeover that stunned people.
She had repainted her doors on the inside of her home black, but instead of using a paint brush, Claire used a tanning mitt.
Claire said: “I do love a good DIY hack, you don’t need a huge budget to give luxury doors in your home.
“I used a tanning mitt from Home Bargains using a grey under coat then an black eggshell top coat perfect.”
She holds a tray which has the paint in with her right hand, and then applies the paint to the door whilst wearing the mitt with her left hand.
Claire starts off by using a grey paint as the undercoat, before then applying a black coat – and with both shades of paint, she uses the tanning mitt.
The video attracted lots of attention, with many rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “Game changer.”
Another added: “This gives me hope about my doors.”
And Claire replied: “Honestly, it’s a case of trusting the process lol.”
Claire, who goes by the name of ‘roseleigh_rose’ on TikTok, used 750ml GoodHome Wood Grey Multi-surface Wood for her primer and undercoat from B&Q.
Other people had concerns about using the colour black on their doors.
One wrote: “I like black doors but my house hasn’t got much natural light and small rooms.
“Is there any reason you didn’t paint walls and ceilings first and do it the other way round?
“Looks good though.”
Claire replied: “Good question!! We’re in the middle of a huge renovation and we needed a door in the toilet so hung this one and gave it a go.”
Is black the new homes trend?
DIY fans are all jumping on the black bandwagon, with #blackinterior notching up 88million views on TikTok.
But interior design guru Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has warned that the trend should be treated with caution.
If you have an entirely black house, “it could look like you’re entering a rabbit hole or Mordor in The Lord Of The Rings,” and Laurence urges interior fans to “choose very wisely.”
Interior tips for black
Laurence believes that DIY fans need to avoid black on black to avoid their homes from hiding furniture.
If you have black accessories, he urges people to be looking at a white room instead.
Laurence also warns interior fans to be aware of black flooring as it is high-maintenance, and could make it look like the floor is a big dark hole.
What are other trends to avoid?
According to Laurence, there are five other home interior trends that DIY fans should avoid when decorating their homes.
These include gallery walls, electric fire walls, legless sofas, grey kitchens and TV’s as centrepieces.
