Sports Briefs: Mariners let lead slip away in loss to DVC
College of Marin saw a three-run lead disappear in the bottom of the eighth inning as host Diablo Valley rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Mariners on Saturday. Mariners reliever Zach Fiene took the loss after walking in a run and giving up a three-run double in the eighth. Chris Delangis doubled and Wyatt Davis, Derek Bartram, Jacob Anteneh and Elvis Zarco each singled for Marin (5-4).
Men’s basketball
Brendon Johnson hit six 3-pointers on his way to a 31-point night to lead Dominican University past visiting Westmont, 94-92, on Saturday. Garrett Siebels was close behind with 25 points backed by five 3-pointers in Dominican’s third straight win. The Penguins (9-14, 6-9 PacWest) also got 16 points from Dale Currie and 11 from Carter Plousha.
Women’s basketball
Dominican University’s slim lead slipped away in the final quarter of a 59-58 loss to Westmont on Saturday in San Rafael. Senior Olga Faasolo turned in a season-high 17 points for the Penguins (17-6, 10-5 PacWest). Dominican got 14 points from Keynote Neal and 10 from Alaiyah San Juan.
Men’s water polo
San Anselmo’s Dylan Woodhead scored twice to help the U.S. Men’s National Team put the pressure on Serbia, but the U.S. couldn’t pull out the win in a 14-12 loss Friday at the 2024 World Aquatics World Championships in Qatar. Team USA is set to face Italy on Sunday.
College signing
Novato High turned the spotlight on three Hornets athletes who are heading to college during a national signing day event on campus. Joshua DeVore has committed to play basketball at California Lutheran University, while Ryan Grusby is set to join the gymnastics squad at University of Washington, and Jordan Waldorf signed to play lacrosse at Lawrence University.
