Notre Dame, Army to Commemorate 100th Anniversary of Four Horsemen with Yankee Stadium Game
This season will mark a century since college football changed forever.
A century after providing college football one of its most enduring moments, Notre Dame and Army are headed back to where it all began.
The Fighting Irish will play the Black Knights at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 23 to commemorate the centennial of their 1924 meeting, Notre Dame announced in a Wednesday afternoon release.
On Oct. 13, 1924, the Fighting Irish upset Army 13–7 at the old Yankee Stadium on the way to a 10–0 season and national championship acclaim. Notre Dame was led by halfback Jim Crowley, fullback Elmer Layden, halfback Don Miller and quarterback Harry Stuhldreher—three of whom were named All-Americans after the season.
After the game, sportswriter Grantland Rice of The New York Herald-Tribune referred to the Fighting Irish backfield as the “Four Horsemen” in his game recap. The name stuck, with the quartet duly posing on horseback for a publicity photo; the game became a pivot point as Notre Dame transformed itself from a backwater Indiana program into one of the most popular athletic brands in the country.

The Fighting Irish are 39-8-4 all-time against the Black Knights, whose last win in the rivalry came in 1958.
