On Thursday, February 15th, marking the 35th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Although the Soviet invasion of the country was a painful and unpleasant incident for the people, resulting in over a million Afghan deaths, thousands injured, and millions forced to migrate.

The Soviet Union’s assault on Afghanistan, which led to a decade-long war in the country, resulted in extensive material and human losses.

In December 1979, the former Soviet Union sent thousands of troops to Afghanistan to control the country politically and militarily.

On February 15 1989, the last units of the former Soviet Union’s army were forced out of Afghanistan due to the resistance of the Mujahideen, ending their decade-long presence in the country.

The former Soviet Red Army’s invasion of Afghanistan marked the beginning of what the Afghans now refer to as the “forty-year war.”

Meanwhile, the Taliban held the withdrawal day of the Soviet Union from Afghanistan on Thursday, 15 February and claimed that Afghanistan has achieved victory three times in the last century, each time regaining its “freedom and independence.”

According to the statement, Afghanistan’s recent liberation from the new occupation in August 2021, with divine assistance, underscores the Afghan people’s strong sense of independence and their determination to protect their religion and homeland.

Afghan experts warn that the current situation in Afghanistan is dire, with a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The country faces challenges such as poverty, water and energy shortages, low literacy rates, human rights violations, and oppressive Taliban policies, putting everything at risk and leading to the worst collapse in its history.
