Former STM teacher's child porn trial delayed, new charge added to indictment
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The trial of former teacher Jacob De La Paz on a charge of child pornography has been delayed for a second time as a new charge has been added to his indictment, court records show.
De La Paz, a former teacher at St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette, was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 17 for one count of attempted production of child pornography in connection with an incident on or about Jan. 12, 2023. As reported by KLFY, he left the school abruptly on April 27, and was arrested by agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security the next day. De La Paz pleaded not guilty to the charge on May 23.
A second indictment, for the charge of attempted receipt of child pornography, was handed down on Wednesday.
According to the indictment, the second count accuses De La Paz of "using a facility in interstate commerce, did knowingly and intentionally attempt to receive child pornography" on the same date as the other count, Jan. 12, 2023.
De La Paz was first scheduled to go to trial starting Jan. 29, and then delayed until Feb. 20, but there will be a status conference at that time instead to discuss a new trial date.
