Pittsfield Suns baseball not playing at Wahconah Park in 2024
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) -- The Pittsfield Suns will not be playing baseball at Wahconah Park in 2024. The decision stems from a 2022 plan that aimed to improve park conditions, but until a design is finalized, playing will be suspended until further notice.
According to the City of Pittsfield, a Wahconah Park Restoration Committee was established in 2022, and the current 1950-era grandstand was deemed unsafe for occupancy. The City worked with the Pittsfield Suns to offer temporary bleachers throughout the park to meet safety standards.
The Wahconah Park Restoration Committee also looked to assess the current conditions of park facilities, get public input, and try to reconstruct certain facilities instead of new construction. A variety of proposals have been offered and are under review for the betterment of Wahconah Park's future.
The City says the park's project won't move forward until a design has been finalized, and as a result, the Pittsfield Suns will pause for the 2024 season at the park.
“The Suns would like to thank Mayor Marchetti and the City of Pittsfield for their commitment to
seeing organized baseball flourish in Wahconah Park, and are excited to assist in whatever way
we can towards the bright future of baseball in the Berkshires,” said team owner, Jeff Goldklang.
The Suns are still working with the City to seek new opportunities for the upcoming baseball season. More details will be released as plans are finalized in the following weeks and months.
“I will continue working with the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee on this project as we
work towards finalizing a design that addresses the ongoing issues at the park,” said Mayor
Marchetti. “We must take into account the price tag of this project and look for ways we can
reduce costs while still providing a great experience for residents and visitors that attend events at Wahconah Park."
“My administration will be actively working with the Pittsfield Suns on a lineup of new
programming for the 2024 summer season as we continue to plan the future of Wahconah Park.”
