ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Injuries requiring medical attention on the job for warehouse workers in New York has nearly tripled since 2017, according to a new report by the National Employment Law Project (NELP). The report, based on data from 2022 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, determined that one in 11 warehouse workers in the state were forced to miss work due to serious injury.

NELP's report showed that the injury rate for New York warehouse workers was 8.8 injuries for every 100 full time equivalent workers (FTE). This is 54 percent higher than the national average of 5.7 injuries per 100 FTE.

“Being a worker in warehousing and storage is now the most dangerous job in New York.” said Irene Tung, a senior researcher and policy analyst at NELP.

According to the report, musculoskeletal injuries such as strains, sprains and tears are the most common for warehouse workers nationwide. In New York, the portion of injuries requiring missed days of work or job transfer was 89 percent, which rose from 60 percent in 2017.
