Large grass fire spreads, engulfs house in Cecilia
CECILIA, La. (KLFY) -- A grass fire that spread to a home brought several firefighting agencies to Cecilia on Wednesday, authorities said.
Firefighters in Cecilia were dispatched Wednesday afternoon to a a grass fire on Main Highway and requested additional grass units due to the large column of visible smoke. When firefighters arrived, they found that the fire had caught a home on fire.
Firefighters asked nearby stations to respond to a structure fire, as well as requested St. Landry Fire District 5 for manpower and tankers. An interior attack was made to the residence, while grass crews simultaneously extinguished the grass fire that had engulfed approximately 2 acres, authorities said. The fire had engulfed multiple rooms in the structure and spread to the attic area.
Investigators said the fire started from a burn pile that caught the yard on fire, spread to a high, uncut field and then spread to the home. There were two more structures, an additional residence and large barn, that were in danger of igniting as well from the tall grass.
Responding agencies included Cecilia Fire Department, Henderson Fire Dept., Arnaudville Volunteer Fire Department, Breaux Bridge Volunteer Fire Dept., Coteau Holmes Volunteer Fire Department, St. Landry Fire District 5, the St. Martin Parish Sherriff's Office and Acadian Ambulance.
