Rabid raccoon confirmed in Fulton County
GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The County of Fulton Public Health Department reports that a raccoon in the Willie Road area has tested positive for rabies. Residents are reminded that all pets and at-risk livestock should be up-to-date with rabies immunizations.
While rabies is preventable if treated promptly, there are some steps to stop the spread of rabies. The Public Health Department recommends the following:
- Make sure outside garbage is in covered containers.
- Do not leave pet food outside.
- Do not handle or feed wild or feral animals. Do not try to adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.
- Avoid contact with all wildlife, especially feral cats, raccoons, bats, and foxes.
- Teach children to never handle unfamiliar animals, even if they appear friendly.
Animals that are considered high risk for rabies are raccoons, bats, foxes, coyotes, and skunks. If you believe you have been bitten or scratched by a rabid animal, seek medical attention and report the incident to the local health department.
