MCAL announces its winter all-league teams
The MCAL released its all-league teams for winter and the four players of the year all had one thing in common — they all led their teams to regular-season league championships.
Branson’s Semetri Carr and Marin Catholic’s Izzy McFadden were the selections in boys and girls basketball, respectively. Redwood’s Jack Middleton and Tam’s Maren Jones were the picks in boys and girls soccer, respectively.
The four regular-season champions combined to go 31-0-1 in MCAL play with the Tam girls soccer team’s 1-1 draw against Marin Catholic the only blemish.
The entire list of winter selections will run in print sometime next month when the IJ selects its winter players of the year.
Boys basketball
Branson, which is set to face De La Salle in the North Coast Section Open Division semifinals on Wednesday, put four players on the all-league teams. Jase Butler was placed on the first team while Finley Keeffe and Joaquin Aguillon were second-team selections.
The other first-team picks were Marin Catholic’s Charles Williams, Redwood’s Jake Vasquez, Archie Williams’ Owen Bugas, plus Tam’s Auvin Cole.
Girls basketball
The MC girls, who are set to compete in the NCS D-III semifinals on Tuesday night, got a huge season from McFadden and also placed Madie Dayton and Cecily Hadd on the first team. Alyssa Spagnuolo (second team) and Jocelyn Gigounas (honorable mention) were also selected.
Redwood, still in the hunt for the D-II section title, placed Kitty White and Maya Saibel on the first team. Branson’s Avery Myerberg also made the cut.
Boys soccer
Redwood was strong from front to back in going unbeaten against MCAL opposition this year, putting players at every level on the MCAL first team. In addition to Middleton, a holding midfielder, earning player-of-the-year honors, goalie Jackson Walker, defenders Ensio Sardans and Jack Corvi, midfielder Masa Fujita, and forward Thomas Griffin were all first teamers.
Tam put two players on the first team in defender Mateo Hale and midfielder Griffin Gustafson. Five other programs placed one player apiece on the first team — Enrique Guzman (MC), Cole Sullivan (Archie Williams), Jaden Sher (Branson), Angel Hidalgo (San Rafael), plus Jordy Diaz DeLeon (Novato).
Girls soccer
Tam’s unbeaten run through the regular season was powered in part by Jones, plus first-team selection Sabine Szylko. Goalie Emily McMahon and defender Gabby Hoeberichts were picked to the second team with Marissa Scanlan, Katie Lowenstein, and Lauren Willard all honorable mentions.
Branson, MC and Archie Williams paced the first team with three selections apiece. The Bulls were led by Ally Hsieh, Riley Pearson and Caitlin Capitolo. MC featured goalie Finn Seymore, Caroline McCarty, and Sloane Carey. Archie Williams placed Phoebe Morf, Tessa Miller, and Samantha Gerner on the first team.
The other first-team selections were Redwood’s Colette Boyden and Novato’s Mia Sandoval.
