'Brilliant': Trump sneakers trolled by Parkland High School shooting survivor
Former President Donald Trump's new sneakers venture is being trolled by a survivor of the Parkland shooting.
David Hogg took to X this weekend to share he'd purchased a URL with a striking similarity to the gold sneakers Trump has begun to sell.
“I just bought shoptrumpsneakers.com” wrote the activist on X. “I have redirected you to a page to call your member of Congress. The twist is the person who makes the call is a victim of gun violence whose voice has been re-created with AI to call for gun safety.”
Anybody who punches in that site is redirected to theshotline.org, an anti-gun violence website that recreates gun violence victims' voices making calls to lawmakers in an effort to affect legislation.
The effort essentially steals some of former President Donald Trump's high-top swagger after launching his own series of sneakers.
"Brilliant," replied @FoodieEccentric. "Your generation will save America."
The $399 limited edition "The Never Surrender High-Tops" are metallic gold-colored with a black "T" at the top of the tongue and Stars and Stripes accents around the ankle and a red rubber bottom.
The blinged-out shoes sold out within hours of 45th president's appearance in at the Philadelphia Convention Center hosting this year's "Sneaker Con".
Trump's actual site gettrumpsneakers.com is very close to Hogg's dummy version and is by CIC Ventures LLC.
The company bills its products as “registered trademarks and/or trademarks of CIC Ventures LLC.”
It also features a disclaimer reading: “Trump Sneakers are not designed, manufactured, distributed or sold by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals.”
According to Trump's TruthSocial, the purchasers of the sold out shoes are attempting to resell them for thousands of dollars online.
According to Hogg's site and at this time of publishing there have been nearly 65,000 calls placed to various lawmakers.
It notes that a total of 43,036 gun violence deaths occurred in last year, and nearly 5,000 people have died from gun violence this year.
Hogg was pupil back in February 2018, when a gunman, a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida and shot dead 17 people and wounded 17 others.
Hogg and other survivors took on the spotlight of mourning to try to bring about change in the anti-gun violence movement and became the co-founder of the student-led March for Our Lives.
