Anniversary of 1776 cannon convoy to Boston
FORT TICONDEROGA, NY (NEWS10) - February marks 248 years since a convoy of cannons helped America's young army free Boston from British military control. It proved to Americans that its soldiers could pull-off a monumental feat.
It started in late 1775. Boston was in dire need of help after British troops became holed up in the city following the battles of Lexington and Concord. There were no heavy guns in the area to force the British out but the Americans knew there were plenty of cannons at Fort Ticonderoga.
General George Washington ordered Henry Knox to take nearly 60 of those cannons and bring them to Boston. The biggest question is how? Fort Ticonderoga curator Dr. Matthew Keagle and News10 photojournalist Gavin Williams explain how they did it and the affect it had on the rest of the Revolutionary War.
