Eye on Health: Local health clinic provides free services to those in need
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- For those needing basic healthcare, who may not be afford it, a downtown Lafayette clinic provides just that at no charge to their patients.
For decades. St. Bernadette Community Clinic in downtown Lafayette has been a place for those underserved in the community to receive free health care, dignity, love, and respect. News 10 spoke with local healthcare workers Jeigh Stipe and Bridget Waldrup-Simpson about the clinic's services.
"You have to come and be here. I can tell you the great stories but it it's like when you walk in you are filled with the spirit of the great work that's being done here," said Stipe.
As an extension of the Our Lady of Lourdes foundation, the most vulnerable members of the Acadiana community can access care at no cost.
"Everything we do here is of no charge," said Waldrup-Simpson.
All are welcome at the St. Bernadette Community Clinic on St. John's Street where non-working, uninsured and homeless individuals as well as sick patients can receive the healthcare they require.
Those services included but are not limited to breast and pelvic exams, chronic care, pharmacy referrals and dental care. Dental extractions performed by local volunteer dentists stand out as one of the most sought after services for those in need.
"At one point the extraction list was a 12 month waiting period. Thanks to dentist you can now get your teeth pulled in 3 weeks to a month," said Waldrup-Simpson
Generous donors, organizations and yearly fundraisers are responsible for the free services.
"It is first and foremost a ministry from all that we do," said Stipe.
The free walk in clinic is open to the public, Monday through Thursday. Specialized dental care is performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
