BENTON, La. (KTAL/KMSS) - The FBI is investigating a suspicious letter sent to Speaker Mike Johnson's home church in Benton, La.

Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office deputies and Louisiana State Police troopers responded to a disturbance at the Cypress Baptist Church around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Onward Christian Counseling Services, founded by Rep. Johnson's wife, Kelly, is located at the church.

According to the FBI, the letter contained a white powder substance. They stated that all field tests have been negative thus far, but local laboratories will conduct additional tests.

Monday afternoon Rep. Johnson's Press Secretary, Griffin Neal, released a statement confirming a suspicious package was sent to the church.

“Earlier today, Speaker Johnson was made aware of a suspicious package sent to his home church in Louisiana. Speaker Johnson and the Johnson family thank U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI, the Louisiana State Police, and the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office for taking swift action and handling the situation professionally. As the investigation is ongoing, we will refer all further questions to law enforcement handling this matter.” 

The FBI warned that sending a hoax letter is a serious crime and requested anyone with information on the letter to contact the FBI, the U.S. Postal Service, or local authorities. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and no further details can be discussed at this time.
