Mesmerizing Beauty of the Sea and Sky
Photographer: Menashe Davison Summary Author: Menashe Davison
The interplay of different shades of blue in parallel bands across the sea's surface and the expanse of the sea meeting the vastness of the blue sky, forms an eye-catching panorama that captivates the observer's senses and evokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for nature's beauty. Such were the feelings of my wife, Nurit, and I on the morning of January 7, 2024, when we gazed west across the calm Mediterranean Sea from Rishon Lezion Beach, Israel, with a clear blue sky. Nurit was moved to draw a sketch of what we observed this winter's morn (bottom photo).
Water is intrinsically a pale blue color. Its color results primarily from the fact that it absorbs most of the red wavelengths of light, but its peak transparency is in the blue-green part of the electromagnetic spectrum. So, when we view light that’s passed through several meters of water and returned to our eyes, it appears in shades of blue and green. Factors such as the depth of the sea floor, reflections from clouds (if present) and the roughness of the sea surface can all affect the colors we observe.
