Can ‘The Creator’ thwart ‘Oppenheimer’ at Visual Effects Society Awards?

0

We were kinda surprised when “Oppenheimer” was snubbed for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars. In fact, it didn’t even make the shortlist, so it wasn’t even in the running for the final five. But it won for its VFX at the Critics Choice Awards, and it earned a nomination for Best Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature at the Visual Effects Society Awards. Can it get its revenge by winning there too? Not if “The Creator” has something to say about it.

Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, this is going to be a two-way race. The Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets lean towards “Oppenheimer”: five of them are betting on Christopher Nolan‘s biopic, compared to two who favor Garth Edwards‘s sci-fi actioner. Gold Derby Editors are split down the middle: five say “Oppenheimer,” five say “The Creator.” The two films are also pretty evenly matched according to the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s VES Awards: 11 say “Oppenheimer,” 10 say “The Creator.” But the All-Star Top 24, who got the highest scores when you combine multiple years’ results, have it the other way around: 14 of them say “The Creator” over just eight who say “Oppenheimer.”

So who’s right? Well, every single VES winner going back to 2002 has been an Oscar nominee, so that would seem to rule out “Oppenheimer.” Though if any film could defy historical precedent, it’s “Oppenheimer,” which has been dominant this awards season so far. The only two VES nominees in this category that do overlap with the Oscars are “Creator” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” They’re also the most nominated photoreal films at these VES Awards: “Creator” has seven bids and “Guardians” has six. So if anything, we might be underestimating “Guardians.” Neither of the previous “Guardians” films won this award when they were nominated, though one Marvel Cinematic Universe entry has prevailed, “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018).

Perhaps this really is a two-way race, just not the two our odds currently indicate.
