I did a council house swap and was disgusted by the state we found it in – I’m not ungrateful, but it was gross
COUNCIL house tenants are able to switch their house to another rented council property, if the other person agrees – but one woman has revealed that she did a council house swap and was left disgusted by the state she found the home in.
The mother explained that she had been to visit the home before moving in, but the previous tenants were hoarders, so the dirt and grime was concealed.
Posting on social media, the woman shared a close-up look at her property when she got the keys.
She explained that not only was it dirty, but there was human poo on the floors and spit on the walls.
The woman penned: “The first day we got our council house exchange! It is disgusting.”
Not only was the house in need of decorating, but it was also in desperate need of a deep clean too.
The walls and floors were covered in dirty, ripped wallpaper, which had even been drawn on with a pen.
The floorboards were exposed and the bathroom toilet and kitchen sink were ghastly.
The mother later explained: “House exchanges you take them ‘as seen’ cleanliness is apparently a ‘cosmetic want’.
“I would post a bad picture of the bathroom but I think TikTok would take it down! That’ll show you how bad it is.
“Would you like to scrape human poo off wooden floor? Or clean phlegm and spit off walls in a house you “should” be able to move straight into!?”
Whilst cleaning the home, the woman shared: “Thankfully we are still staying with family, don’t know what we’d do without them.”
The mother later explained that she intends to renovate the home and eventually wants to buy it.
She revealed: “The journey is going to be fun but will be worth it in the end.
“I definitely won’t be doing it again!! This will be my forever home now.”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @no.th1rty30, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly gone viral and has since amassed a staggering 1.1 million views.
Social media users were in complete shock at the state of the woman’s home and many took to the comments to express this.
What is a council house swap?
A council house swap, also known as a mutual exchange, is a scheme for people who live in a council or housing association property who would like to swap their home with another tenant.
People often swap to get a larger or smaller home or to move to a different area.
When you mutually exchange your home, you are swapping tenancies with someone else.
Anyone with a full secure or fixed term social housing tenancy in their name with a clear rent account can do a mutual exchange.
You cannot swap your home if you:
- have an introductory tenancy
- have a probationary tenancy
- are in temporary housing
However, at the same time, many trolls told the mother to be ‘grateful’ for the home.
One person said: “At least you have a home.”
To this, the mother replied: “100%! I’m not ungrateful in the slightest.
“This account is just to document the transition from this to a liveable home.”
I saw it was bad but the majority of it was hidden with clutter

Another added: “Mine was like this. She promised she spent six days cleaning non-stop. It was RANK! I even got my carpets professionally cleaned and everything for her.”
In response, the woman explained: “Yeah same as me, left all new carpets, fitted blinds. I even hoovered everywhere on the day of the move! Wish I didn’t bother now.”
A third asked: “Why did you do a swap with them if you didn’t like the house?”
To this, the DIY enthusiast shared: “The house has potential! I saw past the dirt and grime and saw what I could make it. This is just my process of getting it right and liveable.”
When asked “Why didn’t you go to look at it first?”, the woman explained: “I did, they were hoarders. I saw it was bad but the majority of it was hidden with clutter!”
Despite this, the social media user responded: “But now you’re moaning about the state of it.”
To this, the woman clapped back and claimed: “Am I? I haven’t moaned, I’m just stating facts that it’s disgusting… because it is.”
At the same time, another user expressed: “House is a house… it’s not what it looks like, it’s what you make it .. be grateful.”
Following this, the mother shared: “It’s not about what it looks like. It’s about the hygiene standard it was given to me is unacceptable by a council!”
