Jermain Defoe names one Spurs player he would ‘pay money to watch’
Jermain Defoe has admitted that he is a big fan of James Maddison, remarking that the Tottenham midfielder is the sort of player that he would pay to watch.
Maddison had an outstanding impact at Spurs after arriving from Leicester City last summer, instantly elevating the side.
The midfielder showcased just how effective he can be in a system that suits him, having arguably been the best player across the Premier League in the first few months of the campaign.
The 27-year-old was then sidelined with an ankle injury for almost three months before returning to action just a few weeks ago.
While Maddison has not managed to return to the levels he showed before his injury, Ange Postecoglou will be hoping that his key man produces the goods and fires his side into a top-four finish over the coming months.
Jermain Defoe is a big James Maddison fan
Defoe, who coaches the Under-18s at Tottenham and thus perhaps has the opportunity to watch the midfielder in training at Hotspur Way, has admitted that the England star is the sort of player who he loves to watch.
The 41-year-old said on Defoe and Deeney’s Football Firsts podcast: “Maddison, like when I watch Madders play, like you said, you would pay money to watch these players because you know they’ll always do things in the game that make you go ooh. Yeah, I like that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Creative number tens of Maddison’s profile, who are good at picking locks, are increasingly uncommon in the modern game as the sport moves more towards athletic midfielders, with most teams relying on transitions to create chances.
