Migrant suspect accused in attack on 2 NYPD officers expected back in court
NEW YORK (PIX11) – The migrant allegedly at the center of an attack on two NYPD officers in Times Square is due back in court Tuesday.
Yohenry Brito, 24, will be in court for a surety hearing to look into the circumstances of his bond payment. He was initially being held on $15,000 bail, but a church paid it last week.
Brito is still being held at Rikers Island after a judge ruled he would have to remain in custody until Tuesday's hearing.
Police said Brito was the main instigator in the scuffle with officers that happened back in January. He allegedly "got confrontational with officers" after they asked a group of men to stop lingering on the sidewalk in front of a Midtown shelter.
Body camera footage showed Brito being arrested by an officer, which seemingly set off the attack. Several bystanders were seen in the video joining in the brawl, kicking at officers to try and stop them from arresting Brito.
He is charged with assault and obstructing governmental administration.
Others allegedly involved in the assault are due back in court in April.
