Kneads Bakeshop will open a second location at the Village of Cross Keys

Kneads Bakeshop is expanding.

The Harbor East bakery and cafe will open a second location later this year at the Village of Cross Keys, developers for the North Baltimore shopping center said Tuesday.

Kneads will open a “boutique grab-and-go style bakery and coffee shop” by fall 2024 in a new building located between an Always Ice Cream Co. scoop shop and a forthcoming Asian restaurant from Atlas Restaurant Group.

When it opens, the store will be the second in less than two years from Kneads, which rolled out its flagship bakery at 506 S. Central Ave. last spring. The 17,000-square-foot complex has more than 150 seats, a market area and event space, as well as a glass-enclosed “bakeshop” where customers can watch bread being baked.

At 1,300 square feet, the Cross Keys outpost will have a much smaller footprint than the original, but it will feature many of the bakery’s staples, including breakfast and lunch menus, bread and pastries, coffee from Aveley Farms and a tea selection from Wight Tea Co. The shop will also sell beer, wine and cocktails that customers can sip on-site or carry with them throughout the shopping center, thanks to a new marketplace liquor license.

“It’s the perfect place to grab coffee, a pastry, or glass of wine,” Kneads co-owner Kira Paterakis said in a statement. “Our positioning at the front of the property will make it easy for people to dine-in or take on-the-go.”

Paterakis, a granddaughter of the late John Paterakis Sr., the H&S Bakery owner and developer of Harbor East, opened the original Kneads in a former office building near H&S headquarters. The bakeshop replaced and modernized the family’s long-running H&S Bakery retail outlet.

“It is gratifying to bring yet another beloved and iconic Baltimore family and brand to Cross Keys,” Arsh Mirmiran, a partner at Caves Valley Partners, which is leading the redevelopment of Cross Keys, said in a statement.  “Kneads and Cross Keys are a perfect match, offering a modern experience rooted in a proud heritage.”

At Cross Keys, the bakery will also have a kids’ menu, catering for private events and wholesale services for local restaurants and hotels.

Kneads will join a growing list of dining options at Cross Keys, which is in the middle of an overhaul that will also bring new office space and housing.

Brunch spot Easy Like Sunday opened in the shopping center last year and will soon be joined by Cece’s Roland Park, a Mediterranean restaurant from the Cordish Cos., as well as ZaVino Italian Marketplace, a combination delicatessen, grocery and liquor store.
