They Might Be – Former Striker Warns Everton On Changing Approach
Former Premier League striker Michael Owen is of the view that Everton do not have the players to play more adventurous football and trying to change their style could end up being detrimental.
Everton scored a late equaliser from a set-piece to earn a point against Crystal Palace in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Monday night.
The Merseyside club started to look more threatening once Crystal Palace scored after the hour mark and there are suggestions that Sean Dyche should allow his players to be a bit more attacking.
However, Owen does not feel that is Everton’s strength and pointed out that their football is best having a robust defence, a hard-working midfield and the ability to score from set-pieces.
The former Premier League striker insisted that Everton do not have the players to create more chances and any attempt to make them a bit more adventurous could end up having a detrimental effect on what they do well.
Owen said after the game on Premier League Productions: “I think you have got to play to your strengths.
“We have looked at their strengths so far and they have got the fourth-best defensive record in the league.
“If they go a little bit gung-ho, I don’t think they have the players to actually create too much, to be honest.
“It’s a strong midfield, they have got legs in there, but it’s not creative at all and you have got one or two players who are creative in that team.
“[Jack] Harrison came off the bench and it becomes a little more creative but in the main, they are a team that are set up to defend, set up to be robust, to outrun the other team and maybe score on set-pieces.
“That’s what all the numbers suggest as well this season.
“I think that’s what they are and if they try to change it, they might be opening themselves up a little bit.”
Everton are sitting just outside the relegation zone on the basis of having a better goal difference than Luton Town.
