‘Extraordinary’ Spurs youngster finally makes debut on loan after recovering from injury
Alejo Veliz is back on the football field and has made his debut for Sevilla with a brief cameo in their latest La Liga game, after earning praise from his manager in midweek for his efforts in training.
Spurs signed the young striker in the summer, but Veliz was only able to make eight substitute appearances and play 42 minutes before being struck with an injury in December. He did score his first Spurs goal at the end of last year, though (Transfermarkt).
The decision was made in January to loan Veliz out to La Liga side, Sevilla, with the young striker revealing Ange Postecoglou had told him to ‘take advantage’ of the opportunity.
Despite struggling with a knee injury, Veliz has been pushing hard to return to fitness and get back playing, with AS reporting the 20-year-old was likely to return sooner than initially expected.
Alejo Veliz is back on the pitch in Sevilla
Now, the Argentinian forward has made his comeback in a very short but sweet debut for Sevilla, and he almost got on the scoresheet, too.
As per the latest update from Football.London, Veliz came off the bench with four minutes of regulation time to go, but was unable to make a real difference as the scoreline ended 0-0 against Valencia.
However, he nearly had a “dream start” when a cross from Oliver Torres found him in the box, but Veliz’s header went straight at the Valencia keeper.
Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores had been praising Veliz ahead of the game, saying: “Alejo Veliz has trained in an extraordinary way this week. He is tremendously hungry and does everything we ask of him… He’s a boy who is going to mark a clear path of what the team needs again.”

It’s brilliant to see Veliz back in action, even if it is for a short substitute appearance. Hopefully, he can push on and get plenty of minutes with Sevilla until the end of the season, then come back to Spurs next year and make a real impact.
