When do the Capital Region’s ice cream stands open for the season?

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- As March approaches, several ice cream stands around the Capital Region are getting ready to open for the season, and some already have. NEWS10 reached out to many ice cream stands around the area to see when they plan to open.

Here’s where you can currently get your favorite ice cream, and where you’ll soon be able to. Stands that have not yet responded to NEWS10 are under the category "based on previous years." This list will be updated as more ice cream places announce their opening dates.

Open

• Jericho Drive-in and Twist Ice Cream, 19 Jericho Road in Glenmont
  • Opened February 9
• Little Big Fatz, 158 Main Avenue in Wynantskill
  • Opened February 14

Opening March

• Chrissy's Cravings, 152 Main Street in Schaghticoke
  • Opening March 11
• The Grandstand, 1268 Highbridge Road in Schenectady
  • Set to open on March 14, weather permitting
• Summer's Best Ice Cream, 24 Briggs Street in Johnstown
  • Opened February 13 and 14 for a test-run, will be officially opening for the season on March 14
• Martha’s Dandee Creme, 1133 Route 9 in Queensbury
  • Planning to open on March 16
• Guptill’s Ice Cream, 1085 New Loudon Road in Cohoes
  • Opening March 16
• Below Zero Ice Cream, 6093 Route 5 in Palatine Bridge

• Lickety Split, 589 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush
  • Set to open March 22, but if the weather is beautiful that week, they will be open March 18
• Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-In, 5 Schonowee Avenue in Scotia
  • Opening March 28
• Control Tower Ice Cream, 1050 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham
  • Most likely opening March 29 but not 100% sure
• Mama’s Ice Cream, 119 Lake Hill Road in Burnt Hills
  • No specific date yet, but hoping to open late March or in April depending on the weather

• Ice Cream Shop, 2113 Central Avenue in Schenectady
  • No specific date yet, but usually opens the second week of April
• Scoups, 566 Albany Shaker Road in Loudonville

• Cappie’s Drive-In, 264 Route 67 in Amsterdam
  • Cappie's just came under new ownership, the new owners are still working on finalizing an official opening date for the 2024 season

• Smiles Soft Serve Ice Cream, 5 John Street in Nassau
  • Smiles is currently open for Fish Fry Fridays but has not started serving ice cream yet. In 2023, the stand opened for ice cream on April 1.

  • Opened on April 14 last year
• J.J.’s Snack Bar, 2 Saratoga Avenue in Ballston Spa
  • Usually opens in April
• Fat Boys Ice Cream, 104 Freeman’s Bridge Road in Glenville
  • Last year opened on June 2 as it was their first year in business
