That airless Wilson basketball you see influencers trying out? It costs $2,500, and it's already sold out.
- Wilson debuted its limited edition airless basketball on Friday.
- The Airless Gen 1 comes with a $2,500 price tag, and it's already sold out.
- The 3D-printed ball is the topic of discussion on X, TikTok, and Instagram.
Wilson created a futuristic airless basketball that's getting all the hype on social media, and the $2,500 price tag didn't stop it from selling out.
The limited edition Airless Gen 1 is a 3D printed basketball that allows air to pass through it — unlike a traditional basketball that's pumped with air. Still, it can be dribbled and nearly fits the required specifications of a regulation ball, according to Wilson.
At $2,500, the Airless Gen 1 is more than 10 times the price of Wilson's official NBA game ball, which goes for about $200 on the official site.
And yet, it's sold out of all three color options.
The airless ball, made in collaboration with retailer New Era, has been the topic of discussion for influencers and sports enthusiasts curious to see how it holds up next to modern basketballs.
Early reviews of the basketball have gotten millions of views across social media platforms. The most immediate difference between the Airless Gen 1 and a regular basketball — other than appearance — is the sound.
Reviewer Marques Brownlee dribbled the 3D-printed ball next to a regular NBA ball, and the airless ball bounced to the same height without a sound.
But, viewers weren't easily convinced in the comments. Some compared it to a whiffle ball while others were put off by the price.
"The EVs of Basketballs," one comment read.
Despite the naysayers, the limited edition basketball has sold out on Wilson's website, and it's unclear if it will return any time soon. Wilson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Those who manage to snag one will receive a carrying case, a display stand, and a customized luggage tag.
Time will tell if the Airless Gen 1 will become a collectible or the foundation of a new era of basketball.
