The CEO of Futbol Gran Canaria, Kevin Perez, has provided some insight in the Spanish media on how Tottenham managed to overcome competition from Barcelona to land Lucas Bergvall.
Bergvall is set to link up with the Spurs squad ahead of next season after the Lilywhites struck a deal with Djurgardens for the midfielder on transfer deadline day.
According to various reports, many at Hotspur Way are excited about the 18-year-old’s arrival, with the youngster set to be handed a prominent first-team role by Ange Postecoglou next season (Football Insider).
There has been a lot written in Spanish press over the past few weeks about how Tottenham beat Barcelona to the player, with some outlets suggesting it was down to the Premier League side offering more money and promising the teenager that he would go straight into their first team (Matteo Moretto).
Others have suggested that the Swede’s decision was down to Xavi’s sudden announcement that he would be leaving the La Liga giants at the end of the season (Fussball.News).
What will Lucas Bergvall bring to Tottenham?
Perez, who is the chief of Futbol Gran Canaria – a company that organises training camps for clubs – seemingly has some inside information on how the deal transpired in the final days of the January window.
He told Marca about Bergvall: “Although he has just turned 18, he’s a very mature and humble boy. I guess the experiences he has had have helped him. He has just been travelling between Barcelona and London to negotiate his future. They even gave him a private jet.”
Perez went on to explain that the Swede is particularly adept at operating between the lines and receiving the ball in tight areas, which makes him a good fit for Tottenham’s system.
He added: “Lucas is a dynamic player, technically very well-gifted and who stands out in the last pass. Quality is his greatest weapon. He has a brutal ability to control and play. In addition, he moves with an elegance inappropriate for his age, that is what has caused teams like Barcelona to become interested in him.
“The position in which he performs best is inside or midfield. He likes to play inside, between the lines, to participate in the creation of the game and be in constant contact with the ball.
“He moves very well between the lines and turns well. I would also point out he almost always receives well-oriented to give speed and verticality to the game. The latter could be very good for Tottenham.”

Every single analyst, scout or coach who has watched Bergvall closely appears to be convinced that the 18-year-old is a generational talent. While one can never be 100 per cent sure that talented young players would fulfil their potential, it is clear that Spurs have a gem on their hands.
