As former President Donald Trump faces criminal charges in his Fulton County election interference trial, Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp on Tuesday told CNN that special counsel Jack Smith interviewed him "months ago" regarding the case.
The news outlet reports a Kemp spokesperson "told CNN in July that Smith’s team had contacted Kemp but it was not previously known that he sat for an interview."
The GOP leader's interview with CNN host Kaitlan Collins comes as a group of Trump co-defendants — along with Georgia Republicans — seek to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case, alleging that she and fellow prosecutor, Nathan Wade, "engaged in an improper romantic relationship that financially benefited her."
Kemp, according to the report, opted not to answer whether or not he believes Willis should be removed, "noting he was a witness in the state grand jury probe and didn’t 'want to speak too much.'"
CNN notes, "When asked what he makes of Trump’s current claims that he is immune from prosecution for alleged crimes committed during his presidency, Kemp told Collins, 'Well, listen, I don’t think anybody’s above the law, you know, Democrat or Republican, independent myself or anybody else.'"
Noting that this interview with Smith "didn't last that long," the governor added, "I basically told them the same thing I told the special grand juries: that I follow the law and the Constitution and answered all their questions truthfully."
