‘Fake news’ – Midfielder responds to rumours of a potential Spurs move
Rumoured Tottenham target Frenkie De Jong has dismissed the speculation linking him with a move away from Barcelona in the summer.
A little over a week ago, Jijantes FC revealed that Tottenham had informed Barca they would be willing to pay €60m (£51.3) for De Jong when the transfer window opens in June.
The outlet suggested that the Lilywhites were willing to nearly match the Dutchman’s current salary to convince him to make a move.
Just a day later, Sport explained that the Catalan giants are ready to offer a Netherlands international a new contract on substantially reduced terms.
The outlet asserted that if the midfielder refused the offer, the club would put on the shop window, given the financial constraints that the Nou Camp hierarchy are now working under.
Rumours of Frenkie de Jong to Tottenham are not true
However, De Jong has now dismissed these rumours out of hand, insisting that he has no plans of quitting the La Liga club at the end of the season.
When asked about the speculation over his future, the 26-year-old said (via Fabrizio Romano): “There are lot of fake news on the press. Some of you should feel ashamed, this has to stop. People invented numbers of my salary. I’m very happy at Barça, I hope to stay here for many years.”

While I do think there is a high possibility that Barca will listen to offers for De Jong in the summer as they look to trim their wage bill, there is no chance that Tottenham would get involved in the bidding war for the midfielder.
The Lilywhites would have to shatter their wage structure to sign the 26-year-old, which would create major issues when it comes to the dressing room dynamics.
