Push to make alcohol to-go permanent in New York State

0

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)--- During the pandemic, alcohol to-go helped the restaurant and bar industry stay afloat. It has been extended in the past, and now, it could become permanent.

Governor Kathy Hochul said, “It’s long overdue to permanently legalize to-go drinks, and in this year‘s budget, we are going to get the job done.”

Hochul wants it passed before the provision expires in April 2025. This is something the New York State Restaurant Association supports, since restaurants are still recovering from the pandemic.

"It’s still a very challenging time— high labor costs, high rent, high insurance and high food costs," explained Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of NYS Restaurant Association. "These are things the industry is still concerned with and would love to continue to offer drinks to go."

Before taking a stance, Stefan Kalogridis, President of NYS Liquor Store Association, wants to see the bill language.

"All businesses are down," said Kalogridis. "Our industry is down, same with the restaurants. I know some restaurants are struggling still. We are just concerned if that bar or restaurant turns into a mini liquor store, then we are totally against it. And hopefully that industry would be policed."

According to Governor Hochul’s Office, the permanent to-go policy would stay same including the requirement to purchase substantial food, like sandwiches and chicken wings.
