Increased fuel charges in Jeff Davis due to Mississippi River water level
JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La (KLFY)-- In December 2023 a letter from Jeff Davis Electric Co-op was sent to customers letting them know to expect an increase in fuel charges for a couple of months.
In a Facebook group, there were comments expressing concerns and asking questions on why people who use Jeff Davis Electric Co-op saw an increase on their electric bills. When News 10 reached out to JDEC, we were sent the letter customers received in December and were told the increase is because of the higher cost for the delivery of coal due to low water levels in the Mississippi River.
I spoke with a someone who wished to remain anonymous, who says the increased fuel charges has impacted everyone, especially people on fixed incomes.
"It's costing them and it's making it hard for people to live," they explained.
Some people have seen their electric bill double in cost while others shared online their bill is up to four hundred dollars. Citizens say if the fuel cost decreases, they could get some type of financial relief.
"If they would leave it at a certain level or percentage, then what? It would help them. They could budget more," they said.
JDEC says fuel cost have decreased and people will start to see a lower cost starting next month.
