US Weather Dept reports 26 deaths from recent snowfall in Afghanistan

The United States National Weather Service recently announced that due to recent snowfall in Afghanistan, at least 26 people have lost their lives.

According to the latest report from the US National Weather Service, heavy snowfall in recent days has led to the destruction of dozens of homes in 12 provinces of Afghanistan, caused by avalanches and landslides.

However, this organization still maintains that at least 16 individuals have lost their lives in Nuristan Province alone due to snowfall-triggered avalanches.

This situation arises as Afghan refugees are forcefully deported from neighbouring countries amidst a severe humanitarian crisis marked by a lack of job prospects, food, shelter, and medical assistance.

Meanwhile, the Afghan officials have not yet commented on this report from the US National Weather Service.

The Meteorology Directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation reported heavy snowfall and rain accompanied by storms and flooding in several provinces of the country at the beginning of the week.

This comes as concerns about drought in Afghanistan exist due to low rainfall this year.

Afghanistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts in the world, with warnings from the United Nations about the consequences of earthquakes, persistent drought, and devastating floods.
