€18m Man Utd star can earn new contract by stepping up after Luke Shaw's injury - View
Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has a big chance to earn a new contract by stepping up at left-back in the injury absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Malacia has been sidelined since the start of the season after a knee surgery. The Dutchman suffered a setback during his recovery and there is no exact return date for now.
Meanwhile, Shaw is also sidelined for the rest of the campaign with a muscle injury. United confirmed yesterday that the Englishman will be out for an extended period.
The news is a huge blow for the Red Devils as they are currently without a specialist left-back.
Sergio Reguilon’s loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur was terminated in January while the club made the decision to loan out Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica with a buy option.
Hence, Lindelof is currently the most likely choice at left-back as manager Erik ten Hag can’t play Diogo Dalot in the role either with right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the sidelines.
In our opinion, the Swede has the perfect opportunity to prove his credentials and secure a new deal.
The 29-year-old was hugely influential for United at centre-back during the back end of last season where both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were injured at one point.
He started the final nine games of the league campaign where he played with three different partners.
Lindelof was still the stand-out performer with his distribution and concentration in the box and he has the chance to replicate the same from left-back in the coming weeks.
The Swede is not a natural from the position. He was not entirely convincing at Aston Villa this month, but looked more assured versus Luton Town with his decision-making.
In our view, he is definitely the club’s best solution at the moment. Sofyan Amrabat played there earlier this term, but lacked the positional sense as he is a midfielder by trade.
Lindelof, who is currently valued at €18 million by Transfermarkt, has a big opportunity to impress the new hierarchy to earn himself a new contract beyond June 2025.
