Ferry journeys between the Senegalese capital, Dakar, and the southern city of Ziguinchor have been suspended for seven months now. The route was closed by the government in June 2023 amid political turmoil following the prison sentence handed to opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, himself the mayor of Ziguinchor. The closure has brought tough times to people living in the south of the country, whose economy depends largely on maritime trade.
