Maryam was forced to release a statement clarifying she had been counting down in a joke with colleagues behind-the-scenes.

Footage later released confirmed this, with Maryam coming on air exactly as she put up her middle finger in a bout of bad luck.

And now the household name has been given her very own weekday programme by news chiefs.

She’ll host The World Today with Maryam Moshiri on the BBC News Channel.

The show will air weeknights from 7pm and officially kicked off last night.

Speaking about her new show, Maryam said: “I’m delighted to be launching The World Today on BBC News.

“This is my dream job and I’m so excited to be working with the unrivalled team of BBC journalists both in the UK and around the world.

“At a time when global events are affecting all our lives on a daily basis The World Today will inform and also make sense of what is happening globally.

“I want to connect with our diverse UK and world audiences, whether they be watching in the morning in Los Angeles or tuning in in the evening from Dubai.”

Beeb bosses last year laid off five presenters as it merged its two news channels.

They were Martine Croxall, Geeta Guru-Murthy, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera and Annita McVeigh.

However, in a U-turn two of the women will return to the studio imminently.

BBC News have confirmed Annita McVeigh and Geeta Guru-Murthy have been reinstated and promoted to chief presenting roles.
