We live rent-free in a van and it’s so cheap – yes there’s no shower but we wash at service stations because it’s free
A COUPLE have revealed that they live in a van and although it doesn’t have a shower, they are able to wash for free at service stations.
Kieran and Beckie live with their three dogs in a van and are currently travelling around Europe.
As a result of their life on wheels, the couple live rent-free and as a result, are able to save cash not only on this, but bills too.
In a clip shared on social media, the couple opened up about how they shower when on the road.
Beckie explained: “So a lot of people ask how we shower on the road.
“So this is how we do it – we are currently between France and Spain.
“A lot of the service stations you find just off the motorway have showers – some of them are paid for, some of them are free.
“We are actually yet to come across one we’ve had to pay for.”
The blonde beauty then shared that for their most recent shower, they had 18 minutes to share the water.
She added: “We’ve just had a free shower between us. We had to hand over our van keys, never had to do that before, and then they gave us the key for the shower.
“We had 18 minutes of water so it’s a bit of a task but we actually both got showered in 18 minutes, and I’ve washed my hair.
“I’ll dry my hair in the van later because we’ve got enough battery to use my hairdryer, my hair straighteners.
“Listen, they’re never going to be the most glamorous shower you’ll ever have.
“That one was pretty nice and clean to be fair – sometimes you might want to wear your flip flops inside.
“But they work and it allows us to live this lifestyle and not pay for any campsites which is a winner, winner, chicken dinner.”
Break it down
In another video, Beckie went into further details about the costs of living in a van.
She explained: “We travel full-time around Europe.
“This week has been a middle of the road spend week so I’m going to go through what things cost us this week.
“At the lowest amount this week was our showers – we tend to use more public facilities for showers and this week we spent £3.42 on showers.
“The next thing we spent money on was topping up our LPG gas tank, this is the gas we use for cooking. We spent £6.13.
“Then the next thing was data – we paid £13.66 to top up on our sim.
“Our next expense was our miscellaneous items – we treated ourselves this week. We’ve been on the lookout for some comfy beach chairs – we ended up buying two, they came in at £85.48. That was a luxury spend for us.
“Our next expense was fuel – it came at £91.20.
“Our biggest expense this week – we spent £159.48 on food.”
People left divided
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @thetailsoftravel, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 41,800 views.
But social media users were divided at the clip – while some thought it was a great lifestyle, others questioned why the couple didn’t buy a shower with a van.
One person said: “Thank you for this info! This is definitely going to come in handy!!”
Another added: “Living the life.”
At the same time, someone else commented: “Or a motorhome with a shower.”
To this, the couple wrote back: “Yep! But not something we have or want yet.”
