I Underestimated Portsmouth – Former EFL Star Makes Admission While Hailing Pompey

Former EFL star Adrian Clarke has insisted that Portsmouth deserve massive credit for staying at the top of League One this season despite a huge number of injuries in their squad.

Portsmouth have won their last four games on the bounce and are sitting six points clear at the top of the League One standings.

John Mousinho’s side wobbled towards the end of last year and some believe that Portsmouth will fall away in the latter half of the season.

Clarke conceded that he also made the mistake of underestimating Pompey this season and admitted that if anything, the team have only kicked into a new gear in recent weeks.

He believes Portsmouth deserve special credit as they are also dealing with a debilitating amount of injuries in their squad.

The former EFL star pointed out that 12 of their players had surgery and ten of them are out for the long term.

Clarke said on the What The EFL Podcast: “I was guilty of underestimating them as well.

“I thought they might just fall away but they have kicked on and they have done so with loads of injuries.

“They have lost a lot of players; I think 12 players this season for Pompey had surgery.

“Ten of them are out long-term, six are out for the rest of the season and some of them are key players.

“I think they are doing magnificently.”

Portsmouth will hope to keep their run going when they visit the Valley to take on Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
