SAG Awards Experts slugfest: Our winner predictions (plus PGA and Indie Spirits too)
Will the quartet of acting winners at BAFTA repeat at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Will “Oppenheimer” complete its major guild trifecta at SAG and the Producers Guild of America Awards? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with the SAG, PGA and Independent Spirit Awards predictions.
The SAG Awards — now on Netflix — will take place on Saturday, two days after the start of Oscar voting, and six days after the BAFTAs, where “Oppenheimer” ruled with seven wins. With four SAG bids, co-leading the film field with “Barbie” (“Succession leads overall with five), the film is expected to convert three into wins, including ensemble and lead actor for Cillian Murphy. But Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) remains a popular pick. Will the four-time SAG champ add a fifth statuette? Similarly, Emma Stone is the favorite in lead actress for “Poor Things,” but can Lily Gladstone, who was snubbed by BAFTA, make a last stand with a W for “Killers of the Flower Moon”? And don’t be shocked if Annette Bening (“Nyad”) manages to pull off a surprise victory.

The PGA Awards are the very next night, where, if all things go well for “Oppenheimer” at SAG, the Christopher Nolan pic can add the top prize for a PGA, SAG and DGA sweep. But which film has the best chance of upsetting “Oppenheimer”: box office behemoth “Barbie” or something like “The Holdovers” or the surging “American Fiction”?
Elsewhere, we discuss the Spirit Awards (also on Sunday) and why it’s probably best not to try to identify an upset to disrupt the looming domination of “Succession” “The Bear” and “Beef” at SAG.
